A mammogram is a low-dose radiation X-ray of the breast. Breast tomosynthesis uses high-powered computing to convert digital images of the breast into very thin layers (slices) that are then used to create a 3-D image. This “3-dimensional mammogram” is created when the X-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in a few short seconds. Computer software then uses those layers to produce a 3-D image of the breast tissue. Low-radiation 3D mammograms use less compression than traditional standard digital mammograms, and patients tend to feel more comfortable.
