The “body composition” refers to the proportions of body fat versus other tissues in the body (such as muscles, bones, organs, etc.) Body composition testing can help us determine the ratio of body fat versus other lean body tissues.

A computed tomography scan, commonly referred to as a CT scan, is a kind of non-invasive imaging procedure that uses X-ray equipment to create highly detailed images of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images are displayed on a CT computer, and can help provide detailed images of bones, organs, and other tissues. This kind of scan is especially helpful in diagnosing internal injuries, fractures, and even some diseases.

X-rays are the most commonly known kind of medical imaging test. This is a non-invasive body scan that utilizes low levels of radiation (an X-ray beam) to produce digital images of bones, organs, and other structures within your body.

A mammogram is a low-dose radiation X-ray of the breast. Breast tomosynthesis uses high-powered computing to convert digital images of the breast into very thin layers (slices) that are then used to create a 3-D image. This “3-dimensional mammogram” is created when the X-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in a few short seconds. Computer software then uses those layers to produce a 3-D image of the breast tissue. Low-radiation 3D mammograms use less compression than traditional standard digital mammograms, so patients tend to feel more comfortable.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan does not use X-rays. Rather an MRI uses a magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses, and special softwareto produce highly detailed images of bones, organs, and other soft tissues. MRIs allow doctors to visualize more detail than ultrasounds or X-ray images offer, and allow doctors to make evaluations that they would otherwise be unable to make. MRIs are considered safe for patients of all ages.

Ultrasounds are another type of medical imaging scan that does not utilize X-ray radiation. Ultrasonography instead uses high-frequency sound waves in order to create pictures of the inside of your body. These pictures can show the structure of the internal organs, the movement of these organs, and the flow of blood through blood vessels.
